The buttertart is a hallmark of Canadian pastries. Its origin dates back to the pre-1900s and can be found in several recipe books as a filling for pastries. Ask any Canadian what they think and they’ll tell you that a buttertart can be defined as the following:
Buttertart -noun- one word to describe a delightful taste sensation.
Definition: take unconditional love and liquid gold, blend well, pour into a warm, loving pastry shell, bake with care and serve.
The traditional buttertart is comprised of butter, brown sugar, vinegar, and eggs that is baked in many different styles of pastries, but always as a tart. There are many nontraditional versions, and the biggest controversy is always RAISIN or no RAISIN. This results in folks taking sides at family gatherings, and creating #teamraisin or #teamnoraisin hashtags.
Biddy Buttertart is the artistic embodiment of the feeling our graphic artist Tony Steele (SteeleWorks in Lansing, MI) had after he experienced his first buttertart last spring. Our iddy-biddy friend is an avid hockey player who uses a sled to play. They are fun-loving and active, and as the smile on their face shows, happy to be a part of the team. We think they are a great addition to Tony’s other Canadiana Fest creations, Kalam A. Moose, Polli Poutine, and Bobby Beerver!
We hope you’ll come enjoy some buttertarts with us at the Fest!
